Effections v7 for Final Cut Pro.
Final Cut Pro users have two Effections options: one that contains the FxPlug versions of products, when available, and the other contains all After Effects-compatible versions. What are the differences?
The FxPlug version contains the FxPlug versions of DE:Noise and Twixtor.
The After Effects-compatible version contains the After Effects-compatible versions of all the plugins, including the After Effects-compatible versions of Twixtor and DE:noise.
Both versions contain After Effects-compatible versions of the rest of the included plugins.
What are the differences between the FxPlug version and the After Effects-compatible versions of Twixtor and DE:Noise?
- The FxPlug versions of Twixtor and DE:Noise can process images in 10 bit YUV (and greater bit depths, when supported).
- The After Effects-compatible versions of Twixtor and DE:Noise only work in 8 bits per channel, but can also run in After Effects, combustion and Premiere Pro. Note that the FxPlug version of Effections requires FCP 6.0.3 and up.
- Note that 8 bit processing within the FxPlug version is significantly faster than the After Effects-compatible version, but 10 bit or full precision YUV processing takes longer than the 8 bit processing in order to take full advantage of the extra bit depth.
- The After Effects-compatible version of Effections only comes with the After Effects-compatible version of DE:Noise, which will not work in any version of FCP.
So how do you decide what to purchase? Here are some tips:
- If you have a pre-6.0.3 version of FCP and do not plan to upgrade in the near future or primarly use After Effects or Combustion, we suggest the After Effects-compatible version of Effections. See notes below on compatibility of DE:Noise within FCP.
- If you have FCP version 6.0.3 and up, generally we would suggest the FxPlug version of Effections. What if you have FCP 6.0.3 or later and to use the plugins in another application on the same machine, such as After Effects or combustion? You have two options:
- You can purchase the FxPlug version of the Effections package and add the After Effects-compatible version of Twixtor for $99.95 or add the After Effects-compatible version of Twixtor Pro for $179.95. If you want to use DE:Noise in another application, you should purchase the AE-compatible version separately (for $149.95).
- If you don’t care about 10-bit YUV processing within FCP and can work with 8 bit processing, and want to work in another AE-compatible application such as After Effects or combustion, you can purchase the Effections AE-compatible version, and then simply add the FxPlug version of DE:Noise for $149.95 (the AE-compatible version of DE:Noise doesn’t work in ANY version of FCP, including 6.0.3).
This option limits you to 8 bit processing with Twixtor within FCP.
